Fire Causes $40,000 Damage to Home

A fire and gas explosion damaged a Ventura mobile home Saturday morning, but no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The blaze, which began at 7:58 a.m., caused an estimated $40,000 in damage to the home at 17 Chaucer Lane, Battalion Chief Neil Gadney of the Ventura Fire Department said. The fire destroyed the kitchen but did not damage adjacent mobile homes, fire officials said.

Firefighters arrived at the Lemonwood Mobile Home Park at 8:05 a.m. and extinguished the flames in 10 minutes, officials said. Fire officials said the apparent cause was a malfunctioning water heater.

“There was obviously a leak, and the fire burned underneath the water heater, which collapsed through the floor and severed the gas line,” Gadney said.

The occupants, John Ramage and his wife, were alerted by the smoke alarm, officials said. They called 911 and left the mobile home with their grandchild, who was staying with them.

The Fire Department responded with three engines, one truck, 13 firefighters and one battalion chief.
