Share

Another conference for those interested in the convergence of music, new media and the Internet is Webnoize ‘99, which happens in Century City through Wednesday at the Century Plaza Hotel & Towers.

Among those attending are Rob Glaser, chief executive of Real Networks; Anthony Bay, Microsoft’s vice president for streaming media; and Jay Samit, senior vice president of new media for EMI Recorded Music. All three executives will give keynote speeches during the three-day event.

A series of panel discussions will also tackle some of the pressing issues facing the online music industry: Will artists and companies ever be able to charge money for music on the Web? Will Internet upstarts or major record labels find the most success on the Web? Can the rampant piracy of MP3 music files over the Internet ever be stopped?

Some companies attending Webnoize will be launching new products and services at the show. The search engine company Lycos will unveil Lycos Music (https://www.music.lycos.com), a site for searching and playing MP3 files that also includes an online radio network. TuneTo.com, a Redwood City, Calif., start-up, will release a system that allows users to customize their own radio station on the Web. For more information, go to https://www.webnoize99.com.
