Loss of Services at Avenue Library

Share

While we join with the rest of Ventura in celebrating the reopening of the E.P. Foster Library, we cannot accept the loss of services we will suffer at the Avenue Library as staff, computers and hours return to the main branch.

Four out of six computers will be lost.

The library will be closed an additional 25 hours each week.

Staff will be cut well below levels that can sustain existing programs. Invaluable tutoring and reading programs will suffer or be lost altogether.

The Ventura Avenue Library is the great success story of our neighborhood. It is a friendly, attractive, positive place for children and people of all ages. It serves a diverse community well. It is well used. It is the one public institution we can all point to and say, “That works.”

The loss of any library services is not acceptable to our community. Therefore, we are attempting to alert the community to the impending cuts and are mobilizing support to protest any cuts in services and programs below current levels.

We have begun circulating petitions to the mayor and City Council requesting that they seriously explore the ways and means of adequately funding our libraries.

There will be a community rally in support of the Ventura Avenue Library at 3 p.m. today at the library, 606 N. Ventura Avenue, Ventura.
