Irvine’s school trustees, facing some of the most severe cuts in the district’s 25-year history, said they were angry about the need to fire as many as 100 teachers in the months to come.

Residents, who voted down a $95 parcel tax for the Irvine Unified School District this month, should help make the tough decisions about budget cuts, they said at a meeting Tuesday.

Backing up their words, district officials have posted a list of the programs that are on the chopping block on their Web site, which allows community members to submit comments via e-mail. Likely to be cut are programs for art, music, science, class-size reduction, health clerks and small neighborhood schools.

Officials say they must immediately cut programs by $4 million to eliminate their budget deficit. Supt. Pat Clark White said the list includes options totaling more than $6 million from which trustees may choose.
