Katella High School teacher Manuel Colon will receive an award honoring his outstanding contributions to education today from the Orange County Department of Education. Colon teaches Advanced Placement Spanish and runs a program called AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination) geared toward helping students overcome learning obstacles. Last year 69 of Colon’s 70 students taking the Advanced Placement exam received a passing score of 3 or better. Under his guidance AVID has grown from 25 to 120 students in five years.
