The Last Days of Coslet?

The Cincinnati Bengals, the NFL’s losingest team of the ‘90s, are a league-worst 1-9 this season after Sunday’s 24-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and tension is mounting.

“We just can’t overcome ourselves,” Coach Bruce Coslet said after a loss in which the Bengals again self-destructed. They fumbled four times and quarterback Jeff Blake was sacked seven times.

For the first time all season, Coslet raised the possibility that he will be fired after the season, with one year left on his contract.

“That’s a hell of a possibility, that I won’t be here,” he said angrily. “It’s pretty obvious that definitely could happen--could, would, should, might. Will it? I don’t know.”

It looks more likely with each loss.

Said running back Corey Dillon, who rushed for 33 yards in 14 carries Sunday, “We’ve got a busload of talent. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be 9-1. I don’t see any team out there that’s just dominated us. It’s frustrating. I just don’t understand.”

In another part of Ohio, after numerous e-mail complaints from fans to club President Carmen Policy and local newspapers, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to let their faithful bring signs into games at their new stadium.

Policy said of the new policy, which lifts a ban on banners at Cleveland Browns Stadium, “The only thing we’re going to require is that they be in good taste, the signs be appropriate, there should be no vulgarity, nor should they be demeaning to any individual.”

That might be wishful thinking. The expansion Browns are 2-8 and averaging fewer than 10 points a game.
