GALAXY’S KEY PLAYERS

Kevin Hartman Led the league with a 0.91 goals-against average and 11 shutouts. Goalkeeper of the year in MLS. Excellent shot-stopper, good in the air, positions himself well. Will have to be in top form and be well supported by his defense, considering the multiple offensive threats presented by D.C. United.

Mauricio Cienfuegos The Galaxy playmaker utilizes an entirely different style from his D.C. United counterpart, Marco Etcheverry. In constant motion, he buzzes about the field, giving and receiving passes, creating openings in the opposing defense. Tremendous vision and the ability to score off free kicks or open play.

Carlos Hermosillo Mexico’s all-time leading active goal scorer has come alive in the playoffs with three goals in five games. His ability to hold the ball with his back to the goal allows others to play off him. His height makes him a threat in the air. That this is possibly his final game in MLS is added incentive.

D.C. UNITED’S KEY PLAYERS

Marco Etcheverry “El Diablo” has been the most valuable player in the league since its inception, leading Washington to four consecutive finals. Uncanny knack of providing perfect passes at the perfect time. In every way, D.C. United quarterback and inspiration. If the Galaxy can’t foil his playmaking, it loses.

Jaime Moreno The other half of Washington’s “Bolivian connection.” Moreno and Etcheverry’s understanding of each other is almost intuitive after playing together since their youth. What Etcheverry creates, Moreno finishes. He is also a creator of goals, however, and his assists (13) outnumbered his goals (10) in the 1999 regular season.

Roy Lassiter The league’s all-time leading goal scorer added 18 to his tally this season (along with 11 assists) despite a second-half slump. His speed makes him a threat anywhere on the field. A memorable bicycle-kick goal in the playoffs showed that he is back in top form.
