Gore, Bush Leading Rivals in California

If California’s open primary were held today, Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush would run nearly even and well ahead of the closest rivals within their own parties, according to a poll published Sunday.
Vice President Gore received 28% of the support in a hypothetical open primary compared with just 13% for former Sen. Bill Bradley of New Jersey, according to the survey conducted by the San Francisco Examiner and television station KTVU.
Texas Gov. Bush would receive 27% of the open primary vote compared with 14% for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the poll found.
In a general election matchup, both Gore and Bradley are in a statistical dead heat with Bush among California voters.
The poll had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.5 percentage points.
The Examiner/KTVU poll contacted 802 registered California voters from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18.
