Some ties were severed when Los Alamitos Unified School District trustees unanimously approved that the Orange County High School of the Arts become an independent charter school at a school board meeting Monday evening.

The arts high school is now no longer part of the Los Alamitos Unified School District and will be moving to another location next year. Negotiations with city officials from Santa Ana and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District are underway and a decision is expected by the end of this year.

Some issues have yet to be resolved, however, such as the status of next year’s in-district and out-of-district students at Los Alamitos High School who will have to decide whether to stay at Los Alamitos High School full time, attend the arts high school part time or attend the arts school full time. Those details will be etched out at a later date, officials said.
