No. 10 Irvine Valley Beats No. 7 Long Beach
Irvine Valley, which finished third in the Orange Empire Conference this season, made its first postseason appearance in women’s volleyball a memorable one.
The 10th-seeded Lasers took on South Coast Conference champion Long Beach and beat the seventh-seeded Vikings, 16-14, 15-8, 4-15, 5-15, 15-11.
Rally scoring was used in the fifth game.
Camille Robles and Lyndsi Johnson had 14 kills each and Anjie Crilly added 20 digs for the Lasers (16-4).
Irvine Valley advances to Saturday’s second round against host and second-seeded Ventura, which beat Victor Valley, 15-7, 15-7, 15-11.
In other playoff matches:
Golden West 3, Santa Monica 0--Golden West, the six-time defending state champions, won its 60th consecutive match by sweeping past Santa Monica, 15-2, 15-2, 15-5.
Natalie Snowden led Golden West with 10 kills and Grace Boyd added eight.
Golden West will host Cerritos Saturday in the second round, with the winner going to the State tournament Dec. 3-5 at Pasadena College.
Cerritos 3, Cypress 1--Michelle Zavala had 22 kills and Ivone Aleman had 16 to lead eighth-seeded Cerritos to a 15-7, 8-15, 15-12, 15-13 victory over No. 9 Cypress.
Freshman outside hitter Heather Storey had 20 kills and Jessica Miles had 32 assists for the Chargers (14-6).
Megan Alderson, from Los Alamitos High, had eight kills and a game-high six blocks for the Falcons.
Cuesta 3, Orange Coast 1--Beth Waterman had 29 kills for Orange Coast (12-11), which lost, 15-1, 10-15, 15-13, 15-2.
