Patrick Trettenero directs Mark Dunn’s “Scent of Rain,” a comic gay version of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” for mature audiences. It’s about a family in rural America trying to find their “special” younger brother a mate.

noon: Music

Bash ‘99, the 29th annual Orange County Musicians’ Union Festival, is a daylong event that features music of all kinds--jazz, classical, Dixieland, big band (with dance floor) and variety--at five venues inside a hotel. Highlights include the Frank Amos Orchestra with former Lawrence Welk Champagne Girl Roberta Linn, the Buddy Childers Big Band, vocalist Karen Gallinger, and the ancient-instrument classical ensemble Baroque Scene. It’s a great event to introduce children to the joys of live music.

There’s going to come a point Sunday when you will be unable to watch one more football game or eat one more turkey sandwich. Go ahead. Get up. Leave the house. Go to a restaurant where turkey isn’t on the menu. And before or after, check out some of the innovative work being done in Los Angeles’ small theaters. Several of our critics’ picks are running this holiday weekend, including “Louis Slotin Sonata,” about a Canadian nuclear physicist; “The Cleaning Man,” a docudrama about Rock Hudson’s housekeeper; and “The Memorandum,” Vaclav Havel’s satire on bureaucracy.

He has sold more than 30 million records worldwide. He’s won Grammys, American Music Awards, a Soul Train Award, a World Music Award and an NAACP Image Award as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Kenny G brings his credentials and his smooth, melodic jazz to the Orange County Performing Arts Center with a “Home for the Holidays” program.

Cult hero singer-songwriter Peter Himmelman comes into his show at McCabe’s trailing all sorts of baggage, including his most recent album, “Love Thinketh No Evil,” a notable contribution to the new Hanukkah album “Festival of Light 2,” the title song and score for the TV series “Judging Amy,” and an “official bootleg” album called “Himmelvaults” that’s available only at his shows and on Amazon.com.

Two magical children’s stories come to life as composer Robert Kapilow conducts the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in concert performances of Michael J. Rosen’s book “Elijah’s Angel,” about a barber’s special gift to a young boy; and Chris Van Allsburg’s “The Polar Express,” about a little boy’s Christmas Eve visit to the North Pole.
