* NORTH CAROLINA CHARLOTTE (1-0) at PEPPERDINE (2-0), SPARKLETTS INVITATIONAL, FIRESTONE FIELDHOUSE, 5--Pepperdine has defeated Long Beach State and Fresno State. The Waves beat the Bulldogs, 70-68, on a goaltending call on a shot by guard Tezale Archie with 0.6 seconds to play. Charlotte defeated St. Bonaventure, 66-56, but is without point guard Diego Guevara, who is sidelined after undergoing an appendectomy last week. Charlotte is an up-tempo team and has only one starter over 6 feet 6, center KenKay Jones. Last season, the 49ers were 23-11 and won the Conference USA tournament and an NCAA tournament game. Colorado State will play St. Bonaventure at 2:30 in another first-round game. The tournament continues Sunday.
