Hermann Maier proved a master again on the World Cup circuit, winning a super-G by a substantial margin for his fourth consecutive victory.

The Austrian star attacked the steep, treacherous Birds of Prey course and beat teammate Stephan Eberharter by 0.94 of a second in the season’s inaugural super-G at Beaver Creek, Colo.

The eighth racer on the course, Maier skied smoothly but powerfully, brushing several gates and finishing in 1 minute 16.51 seconds. That was 1.13 seconds quicker than the previous seven racers.

Maier is making a strong bid to recapture the World Cup overall title he claimed two years ago but relinquished to Norway’s Lasse Kjus last season. On Sunday, Kjus wound up third in 1:17.64.

Daron Rahlves of Truckee, Calif., rebounding from a crash in the downhill, was the top American, finishing 14th in 1:18.35.

Canada’s Jeremy Wotherspoon gained revenge against Olympic champion Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan in the 500 meters at the World Cup Speedskating at Berlin, winning in a time of 35.83 to Shimizu’s 35.96.

Shimizu had beaten the world record-holder Saturday at the same distance and broke Wotherspoon’s track record, clocking 35.67 seconds.

Germany’s Monique Garbrecht won the 500 in 38.96 and Japan’s Eriko Sanmiya took the 1,000 in 1:118.30. Each finished second in the race they didn’t win.

World champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy won his third consecutive singles race in the World Cup Luge at Altenberg, Germany.
