Forums to Focus on Gun Violence

Share

Saying they want to find creative ways to protect neighborhoods from gun violence, a group of community leaders and residents will gather Saturday for two daylong forums at the State Building in Van Nuys.

The town-hall-style meetings, sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Branch of the NAACP’s Youth Council, will promote an open dialogue among youth and adults on how gun violence affects individuals and entire communities, organizers said.

The forum will be divided into two sessions. A youth-only session will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A combined adult and youth session will follow from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., organizers said.

Invited panelists include the Rev. Zedar E. Broadous, president of the NAACP’s Valley branch; Tanya Bernard, interim president of the branch’s youth council, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

“I commend these young people for their commitment in bringing the issue of gun violence to the community for discussion and proactive resolution,” Broadous said.

The forums will be held in the Community Room at the State Building, 6150 Van Nuys Blvd. For information, call the NAACP office at (818) 899-4357.
