Muslim Leader Will Speak on Life-Changing Interfaith Trip
A local Islamic leader will speak to members of an Irvine synagogue Friday about an unusual interfaith trip to the Middle East last spring.
Fifty pilgrims from Orange County traveled to Israel and Jordan to explore the roots of their faiths last spring. The trip included Muslims, Jews, Protestants, Christian Scientists and Bahais.
The trip’s leaders were Rabbi Bernard King of Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot in Irvine and Muslim leader Haitham Bundakji from Fountain Valley. The two men forged a friendship amid misunderstandings on the trip and vowed to continue to improve Jewish-Muslim relations in Orange County.
To that end, Bundakji will speak about the trip, sponsored by the National Conference for Community and Justice, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot at 3652 Michelson Drive in Irvine. Call 949-857-2226 for more information.
“I’m going to talk about the everlasting changes that took place after the trip, especially the Muslim and Jewish community,” said Bundakji.
