Drugs in Python’s Cage Lead to Arrest
The owner of an 8-foot Python was arrested after narcotics officers discovered a cache of methamphetamine in the snake’s cage.
Fernando Vergara Hernandez, 33, was arrested after authorities searched his home and discovered the drugs--and the snake, said Hayward Police Lt. Paul Wallace, who heads the Alameda County Narcotics Task Force.
Task force members also seized 3 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine, guns and $2,000 in cash, Wallace said.
Hernandez allegedly used police scanners and closed circuit television cameras, as well as the snake, for protection.
The python was resting on top of its cage, eating a white rat, when Hernandez allegedly removed a bag of the methamphetamine wrapped in plastic for an undercover officer, authorities said.
Hernandez was arrested last week in connection with methamphetamine sales, possession for sale, possession of a firearm during a drug sale and violating probation.
