“Would you consider becoming an official? If yes, what are the reasons? If no, why not?

RYAN KELLER

Los Alamitos, Basketball

I would not want to become a referee because referees have to put up with so many crazy parents. The parents get in their faces all the time. Referees can’t really win because parents aren’t too happy with any of the calls they make.

I’ve umpired softball, and I wouldn’t do it professionally because parents and fans give you all kinds of grief, telling you how bad you are. I wouldn’t be able to handle that. I hear it all the time, even when I’m catching. Even the best umps make bad calls.

It would be great to referee a football game. It’s a whole different way of seeing the game. Sure, you would constantly have to be watching every player’s movement and actions, but you’ll never find a seat like that in the bleachers anywhere.

I don’t think I could handle the abuse referees receive, so I’d rather be a coach. A lot of teams blame the referees, like in basketball, saying that they’re playing seven against five. But I give referees a lot of credit for what they do. It’s tough.

I would probably not want to be a referee because it is a very difficult and unappreciated job. There is quite a bit of pressure and no matter what call they make, half of the people in the stands and on the team will not be happy with it.

I think it depends how much you love the sport. For me, besides swimming, I love basketball. And I could see myself being an official. It would be a good way to stay in the game. I know there would be a lot of grief and opinions thrown at you by the spectators and players. And you’re not exactly a very popular person. But if you have a passion for the game, it would be fun to do it. However, it would also be hard. Keeping your feelings to yourself. So I can see how it could take a toll on someone.
