Western Gets Fast Start in Beating Sonora

Share

Host Western beat Sonora, 63-18, Friday night as running backs Jamiah Williamson and Will Ruffin led a methodical Wing-T offense.

Ruffin led the way with 163 yards in seven carries, scored three touchdowns and added an interception.

Wiliamson chipped in 108 yards in three carries and also added three touchdowns.

Sonora didn’t help its already tough task of stopping Western’s offense by committing 11 penalties for nearly 150 yards.

On the first play from scrimmage, Western’s David Gober took a pitch from Mike Hicks at his own 20 and raced through the Raider defense untouched for a touchdown.

The Pioneer offense ran into only one fourth-down situation.

“We had all our weapons contributing tonight and our line provided some massive holes for our running backs,” Western Coach Toby Howell said.

In the third quarter, Ruffin added an electrifying 65-yard touchdown run when he ran into a pile of Raider defenders, spun around, changed direction, and bolted down the sideline to make the score 56-10.

“Everything worked for us tonight,” Ruffin said. “I kept all my momentum out in front of me and tried to stay away from the gold jerseys.”
