Ray Shines in Sacramento’s Victory

Ricky Ray threw two touchdown passes to lead Cal State Sacramento over Portland State, 41-14, in a Big Sky Conference game Saturday afternoon at Sacramento.

Charles Roberts ran 33 yards for a touchdown, giving Sacramento a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

The Hornets (4-2, 1-2 in Big Sky) increased the lead to 14-0 on Derard Barton’s 13-yard run in the first quarter.

Portland State (4-2, 3-1) cut the deficit to 14-7 on a one-yard run by Charles Dunn.

The former Pasadena Muir standout finished with 74 yards in 14 carries.

The Hornets led at halftime, 24-7, and increased the cushion to 31-7 in the third quarter when Ray connected with Lamont Webb on a 65-yard touchdown pass.

Ray completed 18 of 22 passes for 244 yards.

Roberts, the Big Sky’s leading rusher with 1,112 yards, had 94 yards in 20 carries.

Portland State’s Jimmy Blanchard had 127 yards passing and one touchdown.

Montana State 29, Weber State 6--Dusty Broderick threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns at Bozeman, Mont.

Defensive end Shaun Ross had four sacks and the Bobcats (3-2, 1-1) held Weber State to 10 yards rushing.

Matthew Peot gave Montana State a 9-0 lead on field goals of 34, 32 and 44 yards, the last with 9:25 left in the second quarter.

Weber State (3-3, 2-2) answered with a 36-yard field goal by Mike Minnoch with 2:50 to play in the first half.

Broderick hit Chip Hobbs with a scoring pass with 11 seconds remaining in the half after Weber State quarterback Cole Cooper fumbled and end Nick Morasko recovered at the Weber State 36.

Broderick and Hobbs hooked up again on a 37-yard touchdown play in the third quarter.

Minnoch made a 36-yard field goal with 8:52 left in the quarter to cut the deficit, 22-6.

Freshman running back Brandon Vancleeve’s first rushing touchdown, a 14-yard rumble up the middle with 2:50 to play, capped a 16-play, 99-yard drive.

Cooper completed 25 of 38 passes for 268 yards.

Northern Arizona 43, Idaho State 28--Travis Brown threw six touchdown at Pocatello, Idaho.

Brown has 70 career touchdown passes, tying Northern Arizona’s record held by Greg Wyatt.

After a scoreless first quarter, Brown threw three touchdown passes for a 22-0 halftime lead. He finished with 338 yards passing.

Northern Arizona (3-2, 1-1) sacked Kevin McCarthy eight times.

Defensive back Eric Major had a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Idaho State (2-4, 0-4).

Boise State 41, Eastern Washington 7--Running back Davey Malaythong scored two touchdowns and Boise State outrushed the Eagles, 264 yards to 44, in a nonconference game at Boise, Idaho.

Bart Hendricks threw for 154 yards and three touchdowns.

Malaythong put the Broncos ahead, 7-0, on a seven-yard run early in the first quarter.

The Broncos (4-2) widened their lead to 13-0 on a seven-yard pass from Hendricks to fullback Shay Swan later in the quarter.

Boise State took a 34-0 halftime lead with two scores in the second quarter--a two-yard run by Malaythong and a five-yard pass from Hendricks to Jeb Putzier.

The Eagles (3-3) averted the shutout when reserve quarterback Eli Marsh hit wide receiver Rich Naccarato with a seven-yard touchdown pass with 14:18 to play.
