Win Gives Miami Spot in Playoffs

Eric Wynalda and Welton scored in a three-minute span in the second half as Miami secured a playoff berth and clogged up the Western Conference playoff picture with a 2-1 victory over Colorado before 8,107 at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Miami and New England entered the regular season’s final weekend separated by one point in the race for the fourth and final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

The Fusion (13-19, 29 points) kept the one-point advantage with its victory, making the Revolution’s victory meaningless.

Colorado (20-12, 48 points) had clinched a playoff bid in the Western Conference, but its place won’t be determined until Dallas (18-13, 48 points) and defending champion Chicago (17-14, 47 points) close their regular seasons today at Tampa Bay and Columbus.

The Galaxy clinched first place in the Western Conference with its victory at Kansas City Saturday. The Rapids are tied for second with Dallas and are a point ahead of fourth-place Chicago.

New England 2, D.C. United 1--Ted Chronopoulos’ goal broke a 2-2 tie in the shootout and gave the Revolution (12-20, 26 points) a victory over United before 20,695 at Washington in the regular-season finale for both teams. United (23-9, 57 points) opens the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals next Saturday in a best-of-three series against Miami.
