Los Feliz Group Sues Over Children’s Museum Plans

The Los Feliz Improvement Assn. filed a petition Thursday in Superior Court challenging a city department’s approval of a new Children’s Museum in Griffith Park.

The neighborhood association supports the construction of a new and larger Children’s Museum in Los Angeles and “could support its construction at an appropriate location in the Los Feliz area,” said President Charlotte De Armond.

But the association’s board of directors, De Armond said, has determined that the city’s “failure to prepare an environmental impact report for the project is a violation of the California Environmental Quality Act.”

Last month, the Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners approved construction of the museum on a 6.5-acre site in Griffith Park. The project still requires the City Council’s approval.

The vote by the commissioners, De Armond said, violated provisions of the City Charter and Municipal Code.

“And the use of parklands for construction of a private museum,” she said, “violates the Park Preservation Act.”
