‘Milk Wood’s’ Rewards

Share

I found Don Shirley’s review of A Noise Within’s masterful production of “Under Milk Wood” (“ ‘Under Milk Wood’s’ Many Roles Require a Scorecard,” Oct. 8) to be carping and stingy.

I attended the opening night performance with no previous exposure to the material and no expectations, other than an evening of entertainment. At first, I must admit, I was intimidated by the poetry and the dialect, but once I mastered the task of paying attention while relaxing into the experience, I was amply rewarded by one of the most amazing stage productions I’ve ever seen--charming, moving, beautifully choreographed and an absolute tour de force for the truly remarkable ensemble.

The reward for my effort (not inconsiderable after a long week of work) was the thrill of being able to participate in the actors’ accomplishment.

This may not be for the masses, but it is truly theater at its finest. We are fortunate to have a company of this caliber in Southern California.
