* The offenses: Cal is averaging only 16 points a game, five points fewer than any other team in the Pacific 10 Conference, in a seesaw run of zero points against Nebraska, 24 against Arizona State, seven against Washington State and 28 against Brigham Young. The Bears are last in the conference in rushing and passing. They start three true freshmen on offense, including quarterback Kyle Boller and tailback Joe Igber, and a redshirt freshman at wide receiver, Michael Ainsworth. Igber, after making a 35-yard run in his first carry in the season opener, had 116 yards in 18 carries last week against Brigham Young in his first start. UCLA quarterback Cory Paus, also a redshirt freshman, has a personal goal of not having a pass intercepted today, after having at least one picked off in four of his five appearances. That includes abbreviated roles when he was injured or during the early season platoon with Drew Bennett. Paus said he is almost recovered from the bruised chest muscles that cost him 1 1/2 games and limited his throwing. The Bruin guards have also shown signs of improvement after being criticized by Coach Bob Toledo last week.

* The defenses: Toledo was so pleased with the play of the defense, especially the front seven, that he took the unusual step of naming the entire unit defensive player of the game for last week against Oregon. This comes with gradual strides from the secondary, and some rare stability: Today the Bruins will start the same four defensive backs for the third consecutive game. Linebacker has gotten a boost with the play of freshman Marcus Reese, who took advantage of being used on nickel packages to play two-thirds of the game against Oregon, much more than starter Ryan Nece. But Nece is also playing well, so Toledo said he is not considering a change.

* Key to the game: The Bruin offensive line needs to at least slow the No. 1 sack unit in the conference and give Paus time to pass and also open holes to establish a running game.

* Fast fact: The 332 yards passing last week by Paus tied the third-best performance ever by a Bruin freshman. Tommy Maddox passed for 409, 353 and 332 yards in his first season.
