Top-ranked Florida State dillydallied around for a half Saturday night before putting away Wake Forest, 33-10, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Tallahassee, Fla.

Chris Weinke threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to former walk-on Atrews Bell, and Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals.

“We didn’t play great, but we came away with a win,” said Weinke, who completed passes to 10 receivers for a career-high 354 yards. “We will have to be sharper for 60 minutes the rest of the way.”

Florida State had only three field goals and a 9-3 lead at halftime.

“They had a good plan for us,” Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden said. “And we weren’t sharp. We’d better be sharp next week or we’ll get our butts whipped.”

Bowden will try to become the fifth Division I-A coach to reach 300 victories next Saturday when the Seminoles travel to Clemson, which is coached by his son, Tommy.

Florida State, 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC, extended its unbeaten streak at home to 45 games, including 28 consecutive victories.

The Seminoles, 104-13-1 in the 1990s, have won the most games in a decade in NCAA history.

Janikowski kicked field goals from 31, 34 and 52 yards in the first half and added a 32-yarder in the fourth quarter.

“This week the defense had to hold together for the offense,” Bowden said. “Our defense played just about as good as they could.”

Wake Forest (3-3, 1-3) totaled only 178 yards and 11 first downs, scoring its touchdown on the final play of the game.

No. 8 Georgia Tech 38, Duke 31--A week after committing six turnovers but still getting past North Carolina, 31-24, in overtime, the visiting Yellow Jackets escaped again after being outscored, 31-7, by Duke and trailing, 31-28, in the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-1) took a 21-0 lead and appeared to be cruising early, but in the end they needed a short field goal and Sean Gregory’s 19-yard touchdown run up the middle with 2:56 left to stay on the heels of ACC-leading Florida State.

Joe Hamilton’s 36-yard completion to Kelly Campbell, his 11th catch of the day, set up Gregory’s game-winning score and capped Hamilton’s sixth fourth-quarter comeback in Georgia Tech’s last 13 games.

Duke (1-5, 1-2) was attempting to beat its first top 10 team in a decade, as Spencer Romine ran for three scores and threw for one.

Clemson 42, Maryland 30--Quarterback Woodrow Dantzler amassed a school-record 435 yards of offense, including 183 rushing, and the Tigers (3-3, 3-1) used a 21-point run in the second half at College Park, Md., to beat the Terrapins (4-2, 1-2) for the seventh time in a row.

Virginia 47, North Carolina State 26--Thomas Jones set an ACC record with his fourth 200-yard game, gaining 221 yards and scoring three touchdowns, as the Cavaliers (4-3, 3-2) beat the Wolfpack (4-3, 1-3) at Raleigh, N.C.
