Alice L. Parker; Former Schoolteacher

Alice L. Parker, a retired elementary school teacher, died Saturday at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. She was 87.

She was born Alice L. James on Oct. 28, 1911, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Three months later, she and her family moved to Santa Monica, where she grew up and attended school.

After graduating from UCLA in 1933 with a degree in library science, she continued her studies for another year to obtain teaching certification.

In 1938, she moved to Ventura, where she lived for 61 years.

She married James E. Parker on June 25, 1940.

She started teaching elementary school in Saticoy in the 1950s and continued teaching for next 15 years.

She was a member of the Saticoy Poinsettia Club, Ventura Book Club and a philanthropic and educational group. She was also a talented pianist, avid reader, gardener and excellent cook.

In addition to her husband, Parker is survived by daughter Janet Rogers of Helena, Mont.; son Tom Parker of Sacramento; brother Richard James of Vacaville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions can be made in Parker’s name to the Wright Library in Ventura.

Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Jerome E. Kahler officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
