Enberg Is Interested in Angel Job

Dick Enberg, whose signature “Oh my!” calls helped make him the most popular announcer in Angel history, said Thursday he would be interested in filling a vacancy on the Angels’ radio team.

The Angels did not renew the contract of broadcaster Brian Barnhart, vice president Bob Wagner said Thursday. Mario Impemba, the Angels’ other radio voice, will return next season, Wagner said.

“I would certainly welcome a call,” Enberg said. “I would enjoy returning to the baseball broadcast booth. That’s the way I would like to finish my broadcasting life.”

Enberg called games for the Angels from 1968-78, punctuating the lean years of Nolan Ryan and little else with enthusiasm, then gained national acclaim for a variety of network television assignments. But Enberg’s contract with NBC expires at the end of the year, allowing the Angels to consider bringing him back as the first highlight of their upcoming 40th anniversary season.

The Angels declined to comment on whether they would pursue Enberg.

The Angels also are expected to consider promoting Larry Kahn, who hosted the pregame and postgame shows this season, into Barnhart’s position.
