*** 1/2 Arto Lindsay, “Prize,” Righteous Babe.

Share

Quietly and consistently, Lindsay has released a series of superb albums over the past four years that gather up strands of Brazilian pop, feathery funk, guitar squonk and his seductively affectless vocals. A veteran of New York’s downtown music scene who was raised by missionaries in Brazil, this master alchemist likes to offset his love of lush, tropical music with sharp, modernist accents. Here, Lindsay stirs up flamenco guitar with fugitive sound samples and rapper Bean’s protest poetry on “Prefeelings,” then on the ballad ‘Modos” sings in the kind of liquid Portuguese that brings to mind native masters like Jorge Ben and Caetano Veloso.

Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent). The albums are already released unless otherwise noted.
