Share

The year’s most extensive community food drive in Ventura County is set to kick off Monday and continue through Dec. 20.

FOOD Share’s 1999 Holiday Challenge begins with tours of the food bank and refreshments from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Food Bank warehouse, 4156 N. Southbank Road in Oxnard. Ventura County Sheriff Bob Brooks will return for the second year as honorary chairman.

“We serve 38,000 people a month and during the holidays the need is so intense it jumps to 43,000,” said Sue Murphy, FOOD Share’s development director. “We are trying to get the community to participate because the need is so great.”

The Ventura County Assn. of Realtors will organize student food drives at elementary schools in Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura. Rotary Club chapters in Ventura County are asking for donations of frozen turkeys.

Individuals are invited to drop food donations into any FOOD Share collection barrel or start a group collection project with a food barrel and promotional materials supplied by the organization.
