An 18-month-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon after he slipped unnoticed into the family’s West Hills swimming pool.

The boy, whose parents had just sold their house in the 24100 block of Welby Way and had planned to move next week, was found submerged in the swimming pool just before 4:30 p.m., said Brian Humphrey, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The child’s mother attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. When paramedics arrived at 4:34 p.m., they also tried to revive the boy, but to no avail, Humphrey said. The boy was pronounced dead at Columbia West Hills Medical Center, authorities said.

“The family’s just overcome with grief,” Humphrey said. “These things can happen at any home, any time.”

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for toddlers in California, according to the state Department of Health Services.
