The Edison field hockey team won its second consecutive league title, defeating Newport Harbor, 2-0, in a Sunset League game Tuesday at Harper School in Newport Beach.

The Chargers (13-0), who have given up only two goals this season, recorded their 11th shutout.

Along with Marina, Newport Harbor (8-2-3) is the only team to have scored on Edison this season, but the Sailors were shut down in the teams’ final meeting.

“Today was the first game we didn’t play as a team,” Sailor Coach Sharon Wolfe said. “My goal for this team has been to improve each game, but this game we took a couple of steps back. We’re just not consistent with our scoring.”

Edison, which has scored 44 goals in league this season, outshot the Sailors, 12-4, with Newport Harbor’s only real threat coming with less than five minutes remaining, when they appeared to have scored, but the goal was called back because of no offensive touch in the box.

Edison controlled the first half, allowing the Sailors across midfield only twice and giving up no shots on goal. Mary Frausto gave the Chargers the lead 14 minutes into the game, when she tapped a rebound into the back corner of the goal behind Sailor goalkeeper Susan Lear. Lear finished with 10 saves.

Cathryn Perkins put away the game in the second half, when she slammed in a rebound after a flurry of Chargers’ shots.

“I didn’t expect to see [Edison] go undefeated this season,” Wolfe said. “Last season they had more talent at more positions, but now they have a small core of great players and they use good passing to get the ball to those players. Since Kit Snyder retired from Santiago, Edison is the only powerhouse team left.”

With only one regular-season game remaining, Newport Harbor (8-2-3) moved into a tie for second-place with Huntington Beach (8-2-3). The first round of the Tournament of Champions begins Tuesday, with Edison as the top-seeded team.
