Scare Package : Haunted houses, carnivals, races and contests are on Halloween weekend agenda.

Cities throughout the county will celebrate Halloween this weekend by hosting community carnivals, haunted houses, costume contests and footraces. Activities are planned today through Sunday and, unless otherwise stated, are open to children of all ages.

CAMARILLO

The Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District will hold its 1999 Halloween Community Carnival from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Camarillo Community Center at 1605 E. Burnley St.

Several nonprofit groups will host game booths for kids and give prizes. There is no admission fee, but some of the booths will charge to play the games.

There will also be a costume contest for several age groups starting at 7 p.m.

MOORPARK

The second annual Fall Festival at Tierra Rejada Family Farm wraps up this weekend with a major lineup of activities.

The highlight of the festival at 337 Moorpark Road is a giant maze hosted by the Moorpark Rotary. The cost to walk the maze is $6 for adults and $4 for ages 12 and under.

There are also hayrides, a petting zoo, a giant pumpkin patch, live music, crafts, food booths and a Jolly Jumper. The hayride costs $4 for adults and $3 for ages 12 and under.

This is a major fund-raiser for the Moorpark Boys & Girls Club and other Rotary projects. For more information, call 371-1495 or visit the Web at https://www.moorparkrotary.org.

The farm is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for pumpkin and vegetable picking and hayrides. The other activities will be going on Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

OXNARD

The grounds of the old Oxnard High School will be transformed into a spooky graveyard scene for the Oxnard Police Activities League’s “Nightmare at PAL” haunted house.

The house is open to children 10 and under who are accompanied by an adult. The cost is $5 a child, and the house will be open tonight from 7 to 10, Friday from 7 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 10 p.m.

The fifth annual Farmer’s Market Pumpkin Patch will be held all day Sunday at Channel Islands Harbor at 2810 S. Harbor Boulevard.

There will be a pumpkin decorating contest, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin weight guessing and a costume contest. Most events begin at 10 a.m. and run to 2 p.m. The costume contest will be judged at noon.

People are encouraged to come in costume. Vernessa the Vampire will be on hand for pictures.

Gull Wings Children’s Museum will offer Captain Gully’s Haunted Museum Halloween Bash on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. Admission is free for the event, which is aimed at children ages 1 to 12 and includes games, movies, entertainment and candy.

Hot dogs and soda will be sold for $1. The museum is at 418 W. 4th St. in Oxnard. Call 483-3005 for more information.

SANTA PAULA

Santa Paula’s Community Services Department will host the city’s 10th annual Halloween Carnival on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Santa Paula Community Center, 530 W. Main St.

Children ages 6 to 13 are encouraged to wear their costumes and bring a container to collect prizes. There will be a separate room of activities for children 5 and under.

There will be a haunted house, food court, cake walk, arts and crafts, face painting, basketball throw and miniature golf. Tickets are 10 for $1 for activities, and the haunted house is an additional $1 a person.

The 25th annual Pumpkin Patch and Fall Festival continues this weekend at Faulkner Farm Pumpkin Patch at 14292 E. Telegraph Road.

The farm is open daily for pumpkin picking, but special features such as a sunflower maze, food, live music, a petting zoo and crafts will be available Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Santa Paula Theater Center, in its sixth year of spooking people during the month of October, will continue its Ghost Walk ’99 this weekend in downtown Santa Paula.

A woman’s horrific murder in bed and a spirit that haunts churches up and down the Santa Clara River Valley will be two of many scenes presented by local actors in costume.

Tours start at the Mill at 212 N. Mill St. Tour groups leave every 15 minutes between 6:30 and 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children, who must be at least 7.

Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the Theater Center at 525-3073.

SIMI VALLEY

The Simi Valley Historical Society and the Ventura County Cultural Assn. are hosting tours at Strathearn Park to celebrate Halloween and give residents a fun dose of education about local pioneers and characters from the area.

Actors in costumes and ghostly faces are portraying the historical figures, who include a notorious bandit, a bizarre cult figure and a Chumash Indian leader.

The tours are open to everyone and run between 6 and 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each group will number about 20 people, with tours starting every 10 minutes and running about 45 minutes.

Tickets, available at the gate, are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The park is at 137 Strathearn Place. For more information, call 529-3611.

A haunted house and carnival called Scream 2 at the corner of Madera Road and Los Angeles Avenue will be open today and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The cost is $10.

Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District will host its 38th annual Halloween carnival, featuring rides, games and miniature golf, Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rancho Santa Susana Community Center at 5005 Los Angeles Ave. The event is for children 12 and under.

THOUSAND OAKS

The Conejo Valley YMCA is opening its doors to nonmembers as well as members Saturday for a “Night Before Halloween” party.

Kids should come dressed in costume with swimsuits underneath for the second annual Halloween Family Fun Night, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The swimming pool will be open after a costume contest, and kids and parents can make caramel apples.

The Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold its 21st annual Great Pumpkin Run & Health Fair on Sunday from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Hyatt Plaza Hotel parking lot at 880 S. Westlake Blvd.

Registration starts at 7 a.m. and the races will include a 5K “Devil’s Dash” at 8 a.m. followed by the 10K “Goblin Gallop” at 8:50 a.m. and the 1-mile run/walk “Trick-or-Treat Trot” at 9 a.m. The longer races are certified by the USA Track & Field Organization.

Preregistration is available at the chamber office at 600 Hampshire Road in Thousand Oaks. Preregistration cost for the 5K and 10K races is $17, which includes a race T-shirt, or $12 without a shirt. The early cost for the 1-mile run/walk is $12 with shirt and $7 without. All registrations prices are $5 more on race day.

The races are open to all ages, and a medal will be given to every child who finishes.Trophies will be given to the top three male and female winners in each age group in the longer runs.

The course is scenic and flat, and participants will receive refreshments. Runners are invited to wear Halloween costumes, and prizes will be awarded for best costume.

VENTURA

The eighth annual Ventura Boys & Girls Club Haunted House will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Harbor Village at 1591 Spinnaker Drive.

The haunted house is for children 12 and under who are accompanied by a parent. Admission is $3 for children, adults free.

There will also be a costume contest in front of the carousel Sunday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Children will be judged in age categories at separate times: up to age 1 at 3:30 p.m.; ages 2 to 3 at 3:45 p.m.; 4 to 6 at 4 p.m.; 7 to 9 at 4:30 p.m. and 10 and older at 5 p.m. Everyone will receive a gift, and there will be additional prizes for winners.

Also Sunday between 5 and 8 p.m., Harbor Village merchants will sponsor safe trick-or-treating by handing out candy and goodies to children as they roam the waterfront shopping center. For more information, call 644-0169.
