Cooperative Effort Set to Save Dogs, Cats
An open house Saturday at the East Valley Animal Care and Control Center will kick off a new program linking the city’s animal services department with animal rescue organizations in an effort to place all adoptable dogs and cats in good homes.
Through the new Partners for Life program, rescue organizations will assist the city with animal adoption events held in shopping centers in addition to doing research to help reunite lost pets with owners.
“The rescue organizations will be in the shelter working hand-in-hand with shelter staff,” said Jackie David, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Animal Services Department. “We’d like to find homes for 100% of the adoptable animals.”
The East Valley shelter, one of the busiest in the nation, impounds more than 18,000 animals annually. Last year, 75% of them were put to sleep. If successful at this shelter, the program will be expanded throughout the city, David said.
The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 13131 Sherman Way in North Hollywood.
There will be free food, balloons and children’s face painting, plus a free dog-training seminar at 11:30 a.m.
Those who adopt a dog or cat at the event will receive approximately $500 in free goods and services, organizers said.
