Colvin, Munoz Lead Villa Park Past Orange

Orange ran off twice as many plays as Villa Park and had the ball for all but six minutes in the first half. But it was the Spartans who grabbed a 41-point halftime lead en route to a 69-16 Century League victory at El Modena Friday.

Villa Park (6-2, 3-0) scored touchdowns on its first eight possessions and had four scoring drives that each took less than a minute.

“That was the game plan,” Villa Park Coach Pat Mahoney said. “We didn’t want to let up and get sloppy.”

Villa Park senior Marquis Colvin rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns in 11 carries, hauled in a 27-yard pass and returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

Teammate Daniel Munoz rushed 10 times for 135 yards and quarterback John Henry Jackson was also efficient, completing five of seven passes for 122 yards.

“We knew we’d had to have a perfect defensive game to stop them,” Orange Coach Kevin Capps said. “They have the best skill players we’ve seen all year. There are some real studs out there.”

Orange (0-8, 0-3), which lost its 20th straight game, had eight players rush in the first quarter alone. John Potter, who broke free for a 95-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, finished with 140 yards in five carries and caught four passes for 63 yards.
