Texas, coming off an upset of Nebraska, had to battle to the end to beat a feisty Iowa State team, 44-41, Saturday at Ames, Iowa.

The Longhorns, 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12 Conference, led by 14 points with 9 1/2 minutes left but pulled it out on Kris Stockton’s 18-yard field goal with no time left.

The Cyclones (4-4, 1-4) tied it at 41-41 on Darren Davis’ one-yard touchdown run with 3:20 left, but Texas quarterback Major Applewhite, who passed for 345 yards and two touchdowns, drove the Longhorns down the field to get Stockton in range.

Starting at the Texas 28, Applewhite passed to Ryan Nunez for 38 yards to the Iowa State 34. Hodges Mitchell, who carried 33 times for 158 yards, then ran the ball seven straight times to get to the Iowa State one-yard line and the Longhorns called time with four seconds remaining, setting the stage Stockton.

No. 6 Kansas State 48, Baylor 7--The Wildcats (8-0, 5-0), eyeing a showdown with No. 8 Nebraska on Nov. 13, had little trouble beating the Bears (1-7, 0-5) at Manhattan, Kan.

David Allen scored three touchdowns for Kansas State, two on short runs and the third on a 14-yard pass play. Allen had a 50-yard punt return and also had 65-yard return for an apparent touchdown, but it was nullified by a penalty.

No. 8 Nebraska 24, Kansas 17--The Cornhuskers trailed, 9-0, at halftime and needed a 49-yard scoring pass, Eric Crouch to Bobby Newcombe, with 3:24 left to play at Lawrence, Kan., to notch their 31st consecutive victory over the Jayhawks.

Crouch also ran for one score and Newcombe returned a punt 86 yards for another touchdown for Nebraska (7-1, 4-1). Kansas dropped to 3-6 and 1-4.

Nebraska lost a fumble at Kansas’ one-yard line and had two missed field-goal attempts by Josh Brown.

Colorado 38, No. 24 Oklahoma 24--Mike Moschetti passed for four touchdowns and ran for one and the Buffaloes (5-3, 4-1) had four interceptions in an upset of the Sooners (4-3, 2-2) at Boulder, Colo.

Moschetti, who missed the previous game against Iowa State because of post-concussion headaches, completed 22 of 31 passes for 382 yards, including touchdown passes of 49 and 88 yards to Javon Green.

Colorado generated 537 yards and held the nation’s third-best passing attack to 317 yards. Besides the four interceptions--two by cornerback Ben Kelly--the Buffaloes sacked Josh Heupel three times.

Missouri 34, Texas Tech 7--Zain Gilmore, with a school-record 45 carries, ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers (4-4, 1-3) routed the Red Raiders (4-4, 3-2) at Columbia, Mo.

Gilmore, a sophomore celebrating his 20th birthday, was sharing tailback duty with senior DeVaughn Black until Black’s first-quarter fumble resulted in Texas Tech’s only score, an 86-yard return by Kevin Curtis. It was Black’s third fumble in three games.
