Members of the Irvine Unified School District’s finance committee got a sneak peek at a $140-million budget Monday, along with dismal predictions for the future.
“There is no way that the school district can continue to provide what it does,” said Deputy Superintendent Paul Reed, who added that there is not enough money to support the district’s arts, science and music programs in the long run. “We would need an additional $6 million to begin to get competitive [with other school districts.]”
And should voters oppose a $95 parcel tax in November, more serious cutbacks are waiting in the wings, Reed said.
