Martha Jane Weaverling, the librarian at Rio Plaza School, died Sunday at Ventura County Medical Center. She was 53.

She was born Martha Gray on Jan. 5, 1946, in Conroe, Texas. When she was 9, her family moved to Oxnard, where she later graduated from Adolfo Camarillo High School.

In 1977, with her two daughters attending school, she volunteered to work in the library at Rio Plaza School. Two years later, Weaverling became an employee and worked there for the next 20 years.

“Books were her life. She loved to read,” said Beth Weaverling, one of her daughters. She added that her mother enjoyed square-dancing, gardening and was an active member of Ventura Missionary Church.

Other survivors include daughter Rebecca Weaverling, also of Oxnard; sister Joyce Coert of Santa Paula; brothers Buddy Gray of Ventura, Kenneth Gray of Olympia, Wash., Dan Gray of Springfield, Mo., and two grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Payton Mortuary in Oxnard. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo with the Rev. Leonard DeWitt officiating.
