A 15-year-old driver ran over his 17-year-old brother with a pickup Saturday night after the two boys and one or two companions reportedly had stolen several CDs from a Costa Mesa music store.

The 17-year-old Costa Mesa resident was in critical condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana on Saturday night. His younger brother was being held for questioning by Costa Mesa police but had not been arrested, according to Lt. Ron Smith of the Costa Mesa Police Department. Because they are juveniles, the identities of the two teens were withheld.

The brothers and one or two others had allegedly grabbed several handfuls of CDs from the Wherehouse music store at 17th Street and Tustin Avenue about 6:30 p.m., Smith said. They fled in a silver 1999 Ford pickup belonging to the brothers’ parents.

The teens are believed to have driven south to 16th Street, where they turned right to Santa Ana Avenue and then headed north. The truck pulled into a parking lot at the northwest corner of Santa Ana and 17th Street.

As the driver slowed almost to a stop, his brother jumped from the bed of the truck. Somehow his head was caught under the right rear tire, Smith said.

According to Smith, police found several CDs in the bed of the truck and the parking lot.
