LETTERS ANNEX : Memories of Greece

Share

As a Greek American, I get back to Greece as often as I can to visit family and friends. The article “Greek, but Islands Apart” (Aug. 1) brought back one of my fondest memories: when my cousins and I spent several days on Lesbos a few years ago.

The people were friendly, the island was blissfully serene, the beaches were wonderful. We did a lot of swimming in addition to visiting Eressos, Agiassos and the Petrified Forest.

But my favorite was the last day on the island, which we spent at Molyvos. We were hungry, but it was still too early for dinner (in a country where one doesn’t dine before 10 p.m.). We went to one of the many ouzeris hugging the hillside leading up to the castle and sat down for some mezedes (appetizers) and ouzo before the spectacular panorama of the blue Aegean.

What started as a quick bite to eat turned into a long, lazy marathon of tasty fare and some of the finest ouzo in Greece as we watched the sun slowly set into the Aegean.
