Everyone at Discover a Star Golf Tournament will score a victory, no matter what their handicap.
Golfers who contribute $150 or more for a round of golf will help fund the Discover a Star Foundation’s scholarship program. The nonprofit foundation, sponsored by Universal Studios, provides scholarships for qualifying students of Los Angeles, Glendale and Burbank.
“This is a grass-roots employee effort dedicated to helping the youth of our community,” explained JoJo Tardino, vice president of special events at Universal. “The nice thing about this scholarship program is that we’re really reaching out to students who otherwise might not have the opportunity to go to school.
“Some of these young people are the first in their families to complete high school and pursue higher education,” she said.
The 10th annual tournament, scheduled for Sept. 17 at Pasadena’s Brookside Country Club, has invited program graduates to attend the tournament banquet. To date, 98 students have received scholarships.

The third annual “Fiesta de Los Ninos” raised more than $36,000 for the Eastside Boys and Girls Clubs of Los Angeles.
The event, at the Whittier home of Dr. Richard Zapanta and his wife, Rebeca Zapanta, drew more than 320 guests for a Tex-Mex barbecue and entertainment. Rebeca Zapanta is a member of the Eastside clubs’ board of directors and organized the event along with Pilar Veiga Dobbs and Veronica Avalos.
The Eastside clubs offer a wide variety of recreational and educational activities to more than 1,350 boys and girls.
