KINGS REPORT : Murray Signs Contract

For anyone who has ever said contracts in professional sports should be based on performance, not potential, Glen Murray has a deal for you.

And for the Kings, with whom Murray agreed to terms on a one-year contract Sunday. It could become a three-year contract if Murray is good enough.

“If I perform, it does me well,” said Murray after the first day of training camp at the Iceoplex in North Hills. “If I don’t perform, they’ve got their outs, I guess.”

Specifically, Murray will be paid $1.25 million for this season, with performance bonuses that could add anywhere from $50,000-$400,000.

The Kings can opt to pay him $1.375 million or $1.675 million, plus bonuses in the second season. If they choose the lower figure, Murray can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season as a 10-year veteran not earning the league average.

That third-year option is open to the Kings at $1.775 million, though it could swell to as much as $2.075 million if he is successful.

Murray earned $675,000 last season.

Murray’s contract leaves only defenseman Mattias Norstrom and winger Jason Podollan without deals.

In a different sort of training camp, the Kings did not scrimmage Sunday. Instead, the team was divided into three parts, and each part got two hours on the ice.

The coaches got six hours on skates.

“It’s a long day for us,” Coach Andy Murray said. “We had a [coaches’] meeting before the last practice and I looked around the room and saw that we were getting tired. I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to pick our energy up on the ice because the energy in practice will be a direct result of our energy.’ ”

It got the players’ attention.

“We haven’t practiced that hard since we went to the Stanley Cup finals [in 1993],” winger Luc Robitaille said.

“I think we got more out of it than any practice I’ve been in,” defenseman Rob Blake said.
