College Football Daily Report / USC : Trojans Knew What Wildcats Learned

The closeness of the game between Texas Christian and Pacific 10 Conference favorite Arizona Sunday--a 35-31 come-from-behind victory by the Wildcats--didn’t stun the Trojans.

“We have a lot of respect for TCU. They got after us last year,” safety David Gibson said. “We’re not going to look and judge Arizona. You know, they’re picked the team to beat. We’re not going to sit there and judge every game because when it’s time to play us, they’re going to be at their best, especially down at their stadium. So we’ll be ready for their best.”

If other teams are realizing TCU is a solid team a season after the Horned Frogs stunned USC in the Sun Bowl, the Trojans don’t mind.

“TCU’s a good team,” USC Coach Paul Hackett said. “I know they’re a good team. They played against us with confidence, and they played against Arizona with confidence.”

Cornerback Kevin Arbet, who started his first game as a freshman after arriving at USC as a walk-on, will be sidelined for two to three weeks because of the ankle sprain he suffered on kickoff coverage. Arbet, who believes he might have hurt himself because he was unaccustomed to artificial turf, left the game after one defensive play.

“That was my chance,” said a disappointed Arbet, who has been ruled out for the San Diego State game. “The doctors say two or three weeks. I say I’ll be back Tuesday.”

Backup fullback Chad Pierson will also be sidelined for two to three weeks because of an ankle sprain, but those are the only injuries that affect players’ availability for San Diego State.

USC and Hawaii are discussing playing perhaps every four years in Honolulu. . . . Receiver R. Jay Soward didn’t practice Tuesday after doctors held him out because of illness, but the ankle he hurt in the game is fine. . . . After a review of the play-by-play, the box score was amended to show six catches for Windrell Hayes, not seven. . . . USC’s six rushing touchdowns were the most since the Trojans had six in a 1976 game against Oregon State.
