A motorist was shot and killed by police Wednesday in Pasadena after a chase that began with a bank robbery in Azusa, authorities said.

The suspect, who was not identified, stopped his car on the Foothill Freeway and pointed a handgun at officers, who then fired at him, said California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Wendy Moore.

The CHP closed most lanes of the freeway to secure the crime scene and investigate the shooting, which created nightmarish traffic conditions for evening commuters.

The incident began after a robbery at Fidelity Federal in Azusa. Azusa police pursued the suspect, and Irwindale police and the CHP soon joined the chase.

At about 3:30 p.m., the suspect stopped on the freeway near Lake Avenue, and the CHP closed all westbound lanes.

“He pointed the weapon at his head,” Moore said. “Officers ordered him to drop the weapon and surrender. He refused and pointed the weapon at the officers.”

The man was dead upon arrival at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
