AL AROUND THE LEAGUE : Thomas’ Ankle Surgery Will End Frustrating Season
Slugger Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox ended a frustrating season Friday with the announcement that he will undergo surgery on his injured right ankle Monday.
White Sox General Manager Ron Schueler said Thomas made the decision after consulting with team podiatrist Lowell Scott Weil.
Thomas was not at the ballpark Friday to comment.
“We decided it was in everyone’s best interest to go ahead and move Frank’s surgery up instead of waiting until after the season ended,” Schueler said.
Thomas finished with a .305 average, 15 home runs and 77 runs batted in. It’s the first time he has not driven in 100 runs, drawn 100 walks, scored 100 runs or hit at least 20 home runs since 1990.
The New York Yankees paid tribute to Catfish Hunter, who died Thursday, with a moment of silence before their game against the Boston Red Sox at New York. Black armbands were placed on their uniforms, right below the “5” that honors Joe DiMaggio, who also died this year. Flags were flown at half-staff, and the marquee read “Catfish Hunter, 1946-1999.”
