Carol Grostephan has lived during two centuries and is set to see in a third this January. Grostephan celebrated her 106th birthday Sunday at Sunbridge Care of Tustin. Born in Champagne, Ill., in 1893, Grostephan used to help her father, the town doctor, make house calls by driving him in their horse and buggy.

Grostephan said her family was very progressive. They were the first in town to get a car, and they encouraged her to graduate from high school and travel. Grostephan was widowed in 1961, and she has outlived her children and most of her family. She lived alone until 1989, and she moved into Sunbridge in 1991.

Sunbridge administrators say that Grostephan still has “a witty sense of humor . . . and she loves to tell stories of the past.”
