CSUN Gets $50,000 for Writing Project

A $50,000 grant has been awarded to Cal State Northridge to purchase additional computer equipment to expand a pilot online project to improve the writing skills of incoming freshmen.

The grant, awarded by GTE, will be used over the next two years to benefit students in developmental writing or freshman composition classes. It also will be used to train teachers and tutors. The curriculum was formulated in 1997 by faculty from the Asian American, Chicano, English and Pan African studies departments.

Faculty members said they found that students who communicated with each other online only and at nontraditional times wrote more frequently and at greater length, developed a clearer sense of their own voices and improved computer literacy skills.

“We were really impressed with the results,” said English lecturer Sheryl Thompson, project coordinator.
