State Sen. Joe Dunn (D-Santa Ana) will present a $400,000 check to the City Council at its meeting tonight. The state grant will be used to replace the water tank on Hefley Square that ruptured Sept. 21, injuring six people and causing at least $29 million in damage to public and private property.

The city has not yet decided whether a second, empty water tank structurally similar to the one at Hefley Street should be replaced or repaired. Officials are awaiting the results of a study by engineers and a request for federal assistance before making the decision.

The city, however, already has determined three possible locations for a new water tank: at the east side of Hoover Street, south of Hazard Avenue; at Beach Boulevard and Edinger Avenue; and the existing site of the second tank on 23rd Street and Monroe Street.
