Typhoon Slams Hong Kong; 1 Killed

Typhoon York, with winds up to 93 mph plunged Hong Kong into chaos today, killing one person and injuring 115.

A total of 116 people were taken to hospital with injuries related to the storm, a government statement said. One of them, a man, was declared dead at the hospital, it said. The report offered no other details.

A government helicopter plucked to safety five crew members of a sinking Chinese freighter near Hong Kong, the Government Flying Service said. The five were unharmed.

York caused floods, blocked roads with fallen trees and blew windows out of downtown offices.

It also forced the closing of schools, financial markets and most other businesses. Ferry services to outlying islands and to the neighboring Portuguese enclave of Macau were suspended, as fishing boats scurried for cover.
