Versatile Valencia Beats Los Amigos, 28-3

Valencia Coach Mike Marrujo had a difficult time pinpointing which unit played better in his team’s 28-3 victory over visiting Los Amigos Thursday night--the offense or the defense.

Considering that the Tigers were led by a quarterback who threw three touchdowns, a tailback with a 100-yard performance and a defense that did not allow a touchdown, you could hardly blame him.

“It’s tough to say where we played best, but we played real well up front and that is the key when you play a team like Los Amigos,” Marrujo said.

Quarterback Brian Bartczak completed 12 of 19 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns. The senior put the Tigers (2-0) on the scoreboard first, connecting with wide receiver Sonny Lopez on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 5:43 left in the first quarter.

After the Lobos (0-2) scored on a 30-yard field goal by Victor Estrada, Bartczak capped a long scoring drive by hitting Tony Tran for a 31-yard touchdown.

In the second half, the Tigers kept the ball on the ground and in the hands of Scott Parker. The junior running back finished with 101 yards on 24 carries.

Meanwhile, the Valencia defense dominated in the second half. Lobos quarterback Ao Sualua (8 for 22, 111 yards) was pressured all night and was sacked four times, twice by Cam Hokanson.
