Laguna Beach Shuts Out Calvary Chapel

Ryan Schissler completed six of 12 passes for 78 yards and rushed for a touchdown Friday night as Laguna Beach defeated visiting Calvary Chapel, 15-0.

“We made a lot of mistakes early on, but we just kept running the football,” linebacker Adam Duker said after Laguna Beach improved to 2-0. “I think Pat Chesley and Jack Arnold are the best running backs in the county.”

Chesley and Arnold ran for 49 and 57 yards, respectively.

Calvary Chapel quarterback Luke Garner had a tougher night, thanks to Laguna Beach linebacker Travis Loidolt, who intercepted two of his passes, returning one for a touchdown with 1:55 left in the first half.

The versatile Loidolt had three interceptions in all. He followed up his touchdown with a successful point-after kick, then added a 55-yard kickoff.

“We didn’t play as well as we could have,” said Brian Cripe, Calvary Chapel’s leading receiver. “Lots of miscommunication. Just a real letdown.

“Penalties killed us, too,” added Cripe, who caught two passes for 29 yards and rushed for 12 yards.

Calvary Chapel (0-2) was penalized 95 yards, including one clipping penalty that stopped a fourth-quarter drive, moving them from the Laguna Beach 15 to the 30. The 16-play drive was then stopped by Loidolt’s third interception, this time on a pass thrown by Andrew Mahlow.

Mahlow replaced Garner at quarterback and drove Calvary Chapel into scoring range with seconds left in the game. But Laguna Beach lineman Nick Radach intercepted Mahlow’s last-ditch pass.

Laguna Beach has won two consecutive games for the first time since 1987.
