Estancia scored on three consecutive first-half possessions and defeated Westminster, 20-7, Friday at Westminster.
A 21-yard interception return by Fahad Jahid set up the game’s first score. Jahid capped an eight-play drive with the one-yard run up the middle.
A defensive stand by the Eagles (2-0) stopped Westminster on downs at the Estancia nine-yard line, and the Eagles drove 91 yards in 14 plays for their second score, a three-yard run by quarterback Jeremy Valdes. One play later, a bad snap by the Lions gave the ball back to Estancia, and Marshall Hendricks swept around the right side and broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run.
Hendricks finished with 75 yards rushing and Jahid rushed for 58.
It was a night of frustration for Westminster (1-1). After scoring five touchdowns in an opening victory over Bolsa Grande, the Lions struggled to find the end zone, despite outgaining the Eagles, 337-232.
Westminster turned the ball over on downs at the Estancia 16 in the final minute of the first half, then moved to the Estancia seven-, 24-, and 10-yard lines on consecutive second-half possessions, but the Eagles came up with an interception each time. Westminster finally scored with 2 minutes 4 seconds remaining. After being stopped inside the one on two straight plays, Vince Laurel scored from the one.
